Malcolm Kerr, born in Beirut, studied International Relations at Princeton with specialization in Middle East. He did his PhD at the John Hopkins School if International Relations. He started teaching at the American University of Beirut (AUB), but after 3 years he went on to teach at UCLA, where he spent 20 years. In 1982, he was asked to be the president of the AUB, which he did in spite of the ongoing civil war. On January 18, 1984, Malcolm was shot outside his office by two gunmen. Later, Islamic Jihad made a call to claim that they had been responsible...
Malcom's wonderful wife, Ann, is the coordinator of my grant program in Los Angeles. She invited us to lunch at her place in Pacific Palisades in December. And she's arranged a seminar dinner in the same place next week. I'll do my best to attend, even though it collides with a half marathon I want to run in San Diego.
